What to monitor after an AI system goes live

Quality, knowledge freshness, agent activity, cost and process outcomes in one AI Operations model.

Launch is the beginning of measurement

An AI system can pass testing and behave differently weeks later. Documents, user requests, models, integrations and business rules change. Monitoring therefore begins in design, with baselines, thresholds and named responders.

Availability alone is not enough. An application may be online while answering from stale sources or sending too many cases for manual correction.

Observe four layers

The first layer is output quality: correctness, grounding, completeness and difficult cases. The second is data and knowledge: freshness, gaps, versions and permissions. The third covers application and agent activity: tools, escalations, errors, retries and policy events.

The fourth layer is the business outcome. Measure processing time, corrections, completed cases, timeliness or another result agreed before implementation. Technical metrics without process context do not show the whole value.

Use evaluation sets and user feedback

Prepare representative examples with expected outcomes before release. The same set helps compare changes to models, prompts, data and rules. Update it as new cases and previously unknown errors appear.

User feedback matters as well. A reported issue, manual correction and escalation reason can reveal failures automated metrics miss. Feedback needs an owner and resolution path.

Every alert needs an action

An alert threshold needs an owner and procedure. Response may mean fixing a source, changing a rule, rerunning tests, restricting a feature, rolling back or temporarily disabling the system. Material changes need controlled release.

Mature AI Operations joins monitoring, maintenance, updates, reporting, optimisation and incident response so the organisation knows what changed, who decides and which evidence supports that decision.
